Natural Healing?

This formula is a special blend of ingredients designed to support the natural healing of soft tissue injuries. From everyday activities to physical activities such as sports, jogging, weight training, aerobics, and martial arts can cause inflammation and soreness in both the muscles and joints.  This soreness and inflammation can be caused by physical trauma or the natural buildup of pro-oxidants which results when calories are burned.  This formula is designed to have proteolytic activity on the systemic level, making it an excellent supplement for those who suffer from soft tissue injuries.  This blend is specifically designed to naturally support soft tissue health and reduce the muscle and joint pain and inflammation that can result from an active lifestyle.

Inflammation

Inflammation, regardless of its organic cause, results from a pro-inflammatory cascade involving the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and damaging oxidative species.  Ideally, biological mechanisms eventually attenuate or shut down the inflammatory cascade once the initial cause of the inflammation is resolved.  However, the inflammatory response can become self-sustaining in cases where muscles are not allowed to properly recover from activity, whether the cause is exercise or even everyday activities.  A lack of proper recovery may lead to ongoing inflammation and muscle soreness.  This can be discouraging for those who are beginning a new exercise program, or for those trying to maintain their current program.  As people age, their recovery from physical activities tends to take longer.  Because proteases can interfere with parts of the inflammatory cascade, proteases have great potential for reducing inflammation associated soft tissue injury and may promote quicker muscle recovery after training.  A recent study that focused on muscle soreness and function has demonstrated that proteolytic enzyme supplementation can help to ease soft tissue injury resulting from intense exercise.  The group treated with proteolytic enzymes showed improved muscle recovery and diminished effects of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after intense exercise compared with the placebo group.

Proteolytic or Systemic Enzymes

The Proteolytic Enzymes neutral bacterial protease, protease 800, protease 6.0, bromelain, papain and the proprietary proteolytic enzyme system Serrazimes® are some of the major active constituents of this product, and have been added to aid in the reduction of inflammation.  Since the 1960's proteases have been studied for their role in the treatment of inflammation and inflammatory disorders.  In both animal and human trials, proteolytic enzymes have repeatedly been shown to significantly reduce inflammation resulting from sickness or injury.  Early studies pointed to the antithrombic and fibrinolytic aspects of proteases to explain this phenomenon.  However, other research indicates that microbial proteases actually inactivate pro-inflammatory cytokines to prevent or attenuate inflammatory cascades.  Evidence suggests this is accomplished by causing the hydrolysis of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFNγ).

The inflammatory cascade can also result in the release of oxidative species such as superoxide and peroxide radicals.  These oxidative species are very damaging to cells. The byproducts of this cellular damage can feed back into the inflammatory cycle, triggering more inflammation.  Vitamin C, rutin, grape seed extract, citrus bioflavonoids, and kelp were incorporated for their antioxidant effects in an effort to counteract this pro-inflammatory feedback cycle.  Irish moss is a source of sulfur, which is a key component of connective tissue.  Additionally, calcium was added for bone and cartilage support. 

Proteolytic Enzymes

Neutral Bacterial Protease is an endopetidase that hydrolyzes the interior bonds of most soluble proteins.  Neutral bacterial protease has an effective pH range from 5.5 to 8.5.

Protease 800 is a concentrated mixture of acid, neutral, and alkaline proteases that demonstrate both exo-peptidase and endo-peptidase activity with high substrate specificity.  Protease 800 has an effective pH range of 2.75 to 6.25. 

Protease 6.0 is a mixture of acid, neutral and alkaline proteases that demonstrates both exo-peptidase and endo-peptidase activity with high substrate specificity. Protease 6.0 has an effective pH range from 2.75 to 7.0. 

Papain contains a wide array of proteolytic enzymes, incorporating a broad range of substrate specificity and optimum environments.  Because of this attribute, papain easily and efficiently hydrolyzes most soluble protein, yielding peptides and amino acids. Papain has an effective pH range of 3.0 to 10.5.

Bromelain contains several proteolytic enzymes, which differ in their specificity and optimum environments.  Bromelain has an effective pH range of 4.0 to 9.0.  Bromelain has been extensively studied, both in experimental models and clinical studies, for its effects on the inflammatory response.  It was introduced as a therapeutic agent in 1957, and there is extensive research supporting its beneficial effects on inflammation.

Serrazimes®

Serrazimes® is a proteolytic enzyme system derived from Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus melleus that is designed to be an alternative for Serrapeptidase (a.k.a. serratio-peptidase and serrapeptase) in dietary supplements used for cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory support.  Like Serrapeptidase, protease from Aspergillus melleus has been shown both in vitro and in vivo to significantly inhibit inflammatory responses.   However, in a head to head in vivo trial between protease from Aspergillus melleus and Serrapeptidase, protease from Aspergillus melleus not only showed better anti-inflammatory results than Serrapeptidase, but it also showed fewer side effects.

Other Ingredients

Vitamin C is a cofactor of key metabolic enzymes responsible for the formation of collagen.  Collagen is responsible for the structural integrity of many connective tissues, including cartilage, tendons, blood vessels, and skin.  Additionally, vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of other connective tissue components including elastin, fibrin, and bone matrix.  Vitamin C is also a highly versatile antioxidant, able to scavenge both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.  In addition to scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, vitamin C has been shown to reduce the reactive metal ions of copper and iron, ultimately reducing the oxidative capacity of these minerals.  Vitamin C also works as a secondary antioxidant by regenerating the lipid soluble antioxidant vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol).  Because vitamin C is able to scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and acts as to regenerate vitamin E, it has the ability to positively affect inflammation.

Rutin is a flavonoid composed of the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose.   Rutin is found naturally in a variety of plants, and dietary sources include black tea and apple peels.  Rutin's anti-inflammatory potential is attributed mainly to its powerful antioxidant activity.  Rutin has been demonstrated to scavange superoxide radicals, chelate metal cations, and inhibit lipid peroxidation.  By chelating ferrous cations, Rutin interrupts the Fenton reaction, which is known to generate reactive oxygen species.  Rutin also seems to help maintain the levels of reduced glutathione, which is a powerful biological antioxidant.  The combination of these activities helps to minimize the cellular damage and resulting inflammation caused by the various oxidative processes. 

Grape seed extract contains abundant amounts of proanthocyanidins (PCOs), one of the most beneficial groups of plant flavonoids.  Proanthocyanidins are known to scavenge oxidants and free radicals, thus helping to inhibit the process of tissue oxidation.  Grape seed is also a source of the phenol resveratrol, which has been shown to possess cardio-protective and anti-cancer properties.  Flavonoids and other plant phenolics are thought to possess anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, and immune-stimulating properties.  These properties make grape seed extract useful as an antioxidant, and for overall good health.

Citrus Bioflavonoids are not true vitamins, although they are sometimes referred to as vitamin P.  Citrus bioflavonoids enhance the absorption of vitamin C and act as important antioxidants.  Flavonoids also inhibit collagenase and elastase, which are responsible for the breakdown of connective tissue.  Connective tissue breakdown is one of the factors that may cause arthritis.  Flavonoids reinforce the natural structure of collagen, improve the integrity of connective tissue, and also protect against free radical damage. 

Quercetin is a member of the class of flavonoids called flavonols.  Quercetin is found widely distributed throughout the plant.  Quercetin is a known phenolic antioxidant that has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation.  It has also been shown to inhibit the degranulation of mast cells, basophils, and neutrophils in in vitro and animal studies.  Other studies suggest that quercetin inhibits nitric oxide synthase and modulates the activity of NF-kappaB, an inflammatory mediator.  These characteristics make quercetin a natural choice for this anti-inflammatory product.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, with the largest percentage being stored in the bones and teeth.  Scientific research suggests that calcium is necessary for strong bones and teeth, cartilage, proper muscle contractions, and nerve impulse transmissions.  Scientific research also suggests that calcium supplementation may be a useful supplement for osteoporosis support.

Irish moss is a seaweed that is rich in mucilage and sulfur compounds.  Dietary sulfur is involved in a wide variety of metabolic pathways and plays an important structural role in amino acid and protein metabolism.  Sulfur is required for proper synthesis and maintenance of connective tissues such as skin, hair, nails, tendons and cartilage.

Kelp is a type of seaweed that is a rich source of B vitamins as well as many naturally chelated minerals, including iodine and selenium.  In addition to general nutritional support, kelp may also be a useful supplement for antioxidant support.
