Background

Inflammation, regardless of its organic cause, results from a pro-inflammatory cascade involving the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and damaging oxidative species. Ideally, biological mechanisms eventually attenuate or shut down the inflammatory cascade, once the initial cause of the inflammation is resolved. However, in chronic inflammatory conditions, these mechanisms fail and the inflammatory response becomes self -sustaining. Proteases have great potential for the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions, because they can interfere with parts of the inflammatory cascade; thus breaking the self-sustaining inflammatory cycle.

The therapeutic use of proteolytic enzymes is supported by scientific studies. The proprietary proteolytic enzyme system Serrazimes® has been added to aid in the reduction of inflammation. Since the 1960’s proteases have been studied for their role in the treatment of inflammation and inflammatory disorders. In both animal and human trials, proteolytic enzymes have repeatedly been shown to significantly reduce inflammation resulting from sickness or injury. Early studies pointed to the antithrombic and fibrinolytic aspects of proteases to explain this phenomenon. However, other research indicates that microbial proteases actually inactivate pro-inflammatory cytokines to prevent or attenuate inflammatory cascades. Evidence suggests this is accomplished by causing the hydrolysis of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFNγ).

In addition to the proteolytic enzyme system in FEEL-20 Flex, glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM were added to support normal joint function. Degenerative diseases of the joints and musculoskeletal system can cause pain, tenderness, and a reduced range of motion. These ingredients have shown great promise in helping to prevent the further degeneration of cartilage and can help to reduce some of the common symptoms associated with joint deterioration.

Ingredient Rational

Serrazimes® is a proteolytic enzyme system derived from Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus melleus that is a dietary supplements used for cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory. Like Serrapeptidase (Serrazimes® is a safe fungle alternitive to Serrapeptidase, a.k.a. serratio-peptidase and serrapeptase) , protease from Aspergillus melleus has been shown both in vitro and in vivo to significantly inhibit inflammatory responses. However, in a head to head in vivo trial between the protease in Serrazimes® and Serrapeptidase, Serrazimes® protease not only showed better anti-inflammatory results than Serrapeptidase, but it also showed fewer side effects.

Glucosamine is an amino monosaccharide that is thought to play a role in the maintenance of joint cartilage. It is a building block of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), which is a major component of cartilage. Several studies show that glucosamine supplements for relief of joint pain and stiffness associated with arthritis appear to be effective. One study demonstrated that the long-term use of glucosamine sulfate improved the symptoms and helped to prevent joint structure changes in people with osteoarthritis. The alleviation of pain and other symptoms associated with degenerative joint conditions with glucosamine use have been reported. Recent meta-analyses of several double-blind placebo-controlled trials have supported the beneficial role of glucosamine supplements as an effective approach to treating osteoarthritis.

Chondroitin sulfate is a mucopolysaccharide and a dietary source of sulfur and a major structural component of cartilage and other connective tissues. Mucopolysaccharides give cartilage and connective tissues their elasticity and shock absorbing properties. Meta-analysis of placebo-controlled, double-blind studies indicates that orally administered chondroitin sulfate may reduce the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, and may also help to heal damaged cartilage. This appears to be especially true when chondroitin is combined with glucosamine.

Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) is a dietary source of the element sulfur that can be found in milk, meat, and broccoli. Dietary sulfur is involved in a wide variety of metabolic pathways and plays an important structural role in amino acid and protein metabolism. Sulfur is required for proper synthesis and maintenance of connective tissues such as skin, hair, nails, tendons and cartilage. The proposed usage for MSM to treat joint issues is based on the presence of sulfur in connective tissues such as collagen, which comprises a large portion of cartilage. Preliminary studies indicate that MSM, when used in conjuction with glucosamine, may help to provide pain relief and assist with the reduction of inflammation. Though clinical studies are lacking for this ingredient, it appears to have great potential for supporting joint health.
